It's Pride weekend once again. Some gays think we don't need "Pride" and that we're beyond that or that it glorifies the wrong thing. It is ISN'T just about shirtless gay men on floats, shaking their moneymakers down 17th Street. For me, it's an affirming, even liberating time--the chance to be out and "proud." I'm out and proud everyday, mind you, just by being myself -- but at Pride we can really make some NOISE about it...and have some FUN doing it. This time really shows the diversity of our community--how it transverses age, race, religion, and social-economic status. From the club boys and gym bunnies -- to the bull dykes and the gay and lesbian families, pushing their kids up and down Pennsylvania in baby carriages. When friends greet each other with a greeting of "Happy Pride." I'll post some pictures in this space early next week.

Celebrated my grandmother's big 90th birthday this past weekend in Syracuse. JUST got the pics uploaded. If anyone wants to see them, let me know. My brother called her the "matriarch" of the family in his toast--a very apt description. I'm blessed to have her in my life and that we have a very close relationship. The big 9-0, man -- what an accomplishment.

8 June 2006

A couple of items today:

1) It's summer intern season at my cable news network. And they're literally SWARMING. Our newsroom looks like Calcutta, the sheer density of people. I half expect to see cattle and people selling rugs any minute now. (Some don't even have a place to sit!)

2) One of our tape library folks--who spent two weeks at Disneyland (an annual trip)---got engaged there, with Mickey and Minnie looking on.

3) And my friend Catherine Herridge--who is a correspondent for Fox--donated part of her liver to her 5-month old son, Peter, who has a bile-duct disorder. I'm happy to report the surgery was a success. The two have a long recovery though--Catherine about 5 weeks, and Peter about 8 weeks. Greta Van Susteren has been in touch with Catherine and is posting updates on her blog, GretaWire.

Catherine, husband J.D., and Peter pre-surgery:

4. ALSO new report by the Greater Washington Initiative today shows Washington, D.C. and its Maryland and Virginia suburbs is the wealthiest, most educated metropolitan area in the United States. (Which explains the high housing prices--and traffic.) You can read the story and the report HERE.
