3 September 2007

Labor Day Blues. Yes, I'm one of the unlucky schlubs working on this Labor Day, 2007. "News doesn't take a holiday", they tell me. Boo. What makes it worse--the girl is off today. Double boo.

Random thoughts, Woe-Is-Me edition:

1) Bought Ellie a new "big girl" cat bed/blanket yesterday. See, we found her OLD cat bed (that she had when she was a kitten) when we cleaned out our basement the other day. Well, suffice it say Ellie is a big girl now (emphasis on the word BIG) and doesn't quite FIT her old bed. As we looked through all the options at PetSmart--many of the beds were still too small. We even considered--for a moment--a DOG bed for Ellie, since she needs the room. We agreed that was too horrifying a prospect. Luckily we found a cat BLANKET that she likes, that gives her ample space.

Vintage Joni

2) The girl is going through a 60s phase, musically. (If I had a dime for every time I've heard "Chelsea Morning" on the iPod in the car...) Did you know the Clintons named their daugther after that song? Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, any artist/song that capture the 60s seems to be catching her attention these days. It's actually kind of fun.

Union College

3) My niece Jordan is off to college. Union College--her dad's alma mater. Getting ready to send her a care package this weekend. Boy, I feel old. In fact--the Washington Post did a story yesterday about this year's freshmen moving into good ol' Thurston Hall at GW. Then I felt REALLY old when I recalled that it was 20 years ago when I moved in--and started my college career.

4) Went to the Redskins game last weekend. Skybox seats--thanks to my friend Rachel.
Thank God we were inside because lightning/severe weather delayed the game--and then it was called off altogether after the half. We then had to run across the parking lot in the pouring rain and occasional nearby lightning strike with the rest of the patrons, to get to our shuttle bus to go to the parking lots. I STILL had a blast.

5) I know I could NEVER get away with joining a fantasy football league--but I do join my office SURVIVAL football pool with some of my office mates. Beyond the Redskins, I really don't have any knowledge about how the other teams are shaping up. (Though I have been following the Saints some...)
