Maiden Voyage

I really do like Silver Spring. (Aka Silver SPRUNG...which I like to simply call "The Sprung.")
I've been a city mouse since my college days at GW way back in '87. But last October my partner and I bought a house together in The Sprung. We used to live in a 800 square foot condo on Capitol Hill. Let's just say it was cozy. And in a "transitional" part of the Hill. (wink, wink) Yeah, the low point for me while on the Hill was finding out from the Capitol police that a homeless man actually shooed away a teenager who was trying to break into my car one night. That was a good one. Actually, I dearly loved living on the Hill and thankfully still work near there.

We now live in a bucolic, yet bustling area north of the city in an early 30s cape cod just north of the new "downtown" Silver Spring. (I put "downtown" in quotes because any city center that includes a Red Lobster is automatically suspect. Thank God we're getting some great -- non-chain restaurants with decent wine lists around here.) I was eager to have a yard and a deck. I couldn't wait to mow the lawn for the first time or cook my first steak on the outdoor grill. My partner couldn't wait to have a "real" house and to live in an area where you could actually park. After years in the District, we both looked forward to getting services for tax monies paid. ("Wow! They actually pick up your trash here AND plow the roads!") And both of us wanted to live within walking distances to shops, bookstores, restaurants, and the metro. Bottom line for me: I just wanted to know if there was a huge snow storm that I could trudge through the drifts and get to a bar.

My blog won't be all about my transition to the 'burbs...and to "married" life. Fortunately, my friends, my work, and life in general provide many absurdities and comedic moments that I will occasionally share. I hope you enjoy them. This is my first time writing a blog. Let me know how I'm doing.
